Good game, even after two decades, but no experience with multiplay. First install in windows 10 with standdard setting caused regular error messages, exiting the game. I worked around with saved games but got annoyed. With properties options in steam menu you can acces the installed maps and change the launcg mode to windows 95 or 98. Alas, my controller lost 2 buttons, used in the first install with the joytokey program(third party). But with some adaptions i can play it anyway, just with enoug buttons left. CONTROLLER/JOYSTICK IS VERY RECOMMENDED!Personally, i like to to try a permadeath options. I focus on strategy rather then the shooter. Goal is to surviveand expand, preventing destruction. The endgame is less important. Permadeath means i dont use saved games to prevent battle losses, only for breaks and to save my progress (or struggles to turn the tide). By the way, its boring to save and reload again and again to get perfect battles.Experienced players should try the difficulty level VETERANOf course, if you play withhout my permadeath restrictions on saved games, you can attempt higher difficulty but you end up saving and reloading often just to survive. Where is the fun in that? Balanced migh be VETERAN and permadeath restrictions if you want to be challenged without getting annoying gameplay.IN SHORT : LOUZY SHOOTER BUT GREAT STRATEGY MANAGEMENT GAMEPRO : -original xcom game , -space shooter with strategic elements-funny game comments of pilots-requires some management skillsCON: -needs fixes-unknown multiplayer fun?-combat is way too fast, no idea how to slow this down. Its still fun BECAUSE i recommand tractor beams and missiles in this issue tillyou can use tracking traces beam weapons in the long term. And select good wingmans!CZSTRATEGY HINTS ===SPOLIER ALERT IF YOU WANT TO FIND OUT YOURSELF===Here some great lessons learned. Its based on permadeath doctrine, no saved games for combat advantages. This focus on strategy, not the story line or final stages.*Numbers game for long term. Industrial supremacy! Maths is a ♥♥♥♥♥ in warfare. This means focus on building lightnings and maximizing hangar modules. Those fighters dont need time to be build like firestars and avengers.Just indrustrial mass production! Meaning they reach the front line very fast when ordered. Cannon fodder.Wear down enemy fleets till you can finish them off. It means you must sacrifce cheap fighters to gain equipment to sell or research. Also to decrease enemy firepower before they engage a targeted starbase.*hit and run tacticsWorks fine to kill one or more enemies when faced with great hostile fleets.Make sure to order your planes jump hyperspace before you enter it yourself, sometimes to wait a few minutes.*research tractor beam and tachyon asap! Equip all your planes with tachyon only to capture a lot of enemies and big loot. Only your shp needs tractor beam. *Sell stuff you dont need! Research needs one item of most alien loot. Maximize your ships potential. Dont stack junk or things you will not reseacrh for a long time.*Avoid dangerous combat situations. Makes sure its worth it! Dont play the hero unless its an emergency. Long term focus.*Dont hesistate to sacrifce a outpost or even a starbase. Make sure you get a lot of loots from such disaster to profit and turn it for the good.*When spectres arrive, you know its time to boost your starbase defenses. When phantasm and shades type ships arrive, you can expect trouble very soon!*Order ships to attack weak enemies first. Make sure to have the keyboard or joystick keys on a easy spot. Same applies for shield management orders and fire buttons. Tweak your keyboard or rahter a joystick for the hotkeys you use a lot. Dont waste a joystck key on combat taunts or order rubbish commands.*Friendly fire. Some missiles kill your ship when launched, like the fusion rocket. Not sure why, maybe they are too slow when fired. Just experiment with them in combat training to find out. *Maximize researh of starbases. Focus on the real stuff you need to survive. Ignore heavy laser. Google on the teach tree to find the fast route to tackyon. They really are your secret weapon, besides stacking cheap fighters.*A second base is pricy, but dont wait too long with it. Provides extra hangars And backup when the real trouble arrives. Dont expand too fast, keep your second base close to your primary and outposts.*Build modules for extra pilots. Make sure every base has at least 10 pilots. 2 modules at least. Remember those modules can be destroyed as well, even if a starbase survives.*Specialize two ships in every base for personal use. Make sure they are best used for players only, not pc mass production.*anticipate. When enemies show up, try to figure out their intentions. Great fleets mean serious attacks, small fleets are easy and cheap loot but can distract you. Engage them close to your bases to prevent nasty suprizes for unguarded bases.*Only attack enemy outposts and starbases when you reach mid game and have serious reserves. Make sure your fleet has ships with serious assault stuff installed. Cloaking can be handy for the player as well in this stage.. After you manage to get the game too run you'll be at so low FPS you won't be able to follow a ship around well enough to take it doen in a timely manner.. I can not recommend this game, on the other hand I can not not recommend this game. It's... complicated. Before I start explaining, let me link this XKCD[imgs.xkcd.com] comic.X-COM interceptor is a bad game, but in some peculiar way, enjoyable. Put simply: it's so bad it's good.I can not in good faith recommend it, because it's bad, on the other hand I can't not recommend it, because it's possible that you may enjoy it.On strategic side, it's a typical X-COM styled game, adapted to specific environment. You build bases, expand them with modules, research techs (story-wise you download them from Galactic Science Corps, gameplay wise it's just like research in every other such game), you hire pilots, buy craft, weapons and equipment, and send them to intercept UFOs.Combat is centred about classic dogfighting, with "air drag", max speed and other such elements which are staple of oldschool dogfighting, but make no sense in space. Not that it's unusual for "space" flight sim, a lot are guilty of that and it's not necessarily a bad thing.Word of warning, combat is very fast paced, so fast that it takes some time to get used to. That's not a problem though, your wingmen are very capable and will win fights for you, until you start carrying your own weight. That's about facts, but what makes it enjoyable?Hard to say, attempts at humour are corny, reading "news from Earth" will make you groan or facepalm, interface is clunky because it pretends to be retro-futuristic in-universe screens/displays, combat repetitive and simplistic which leaks into strategic layer also making it simplistic.Still, campaign is short, individual missions rarely take more then minute, big chunk of which is "fly in", and "hyperspace out" animations, and this is probably what saves Interceptor: it's too short to bore you (too much). All in all, it's very subjective, I give negative review because it's bad, but I did enjoy it in a way, maybe you will too?Side note: there's a bug that makes enemy installations impossible to kill, it's solved in unofficial .exe patch, but launching Interceptor with this exe prevented Steam from properly logging my playtime, hence so low value - contrary to what Steam says, I did play game from start to end.. Sounds like a disease.. once this game had it's flair. It was not to bad back in the days but this game has aged very badly. There is no need playing this old mediocre Wing Commander Rip-off... It just isn't very good...NOT RECOMMENDED!
